Art of Animation Resort: Are there standard rooms?

I got this question from one of my readers, Tania:

Wondering if you’ve heard anything on the resorts standard rooms? I did see an article that said there would be The Little Mermaid & Nemo standard rooms. Wondering if this is true as I have 2 little boys & when we go down it is going to be more cost effective for us to stay in a standard room versus the family suite.

Disney’s Art of Animation Resort opens in 2012 at Walt Disney World. The value resort will be adjacent to Pop Century, and it’s being touted as a major expansion of Disney’s family suite offerings.

But the resort will also have standard hotel rooms like Disney’s other value resorts. The 864 standard hotel rooms will be in The Little Mermaid section of Disney’s Art of Animation Resort. The hotel will open in sections, and The Little Mermaid section is slated to open last – in December 2012.

Ironically, The Little Mermaid hotel rooms will be in the first buildings built at the Art of Animation site. Back before the economy went belly-up, Disney was actually building a second phase of the Pop Century Resort on this site. Those buildings were never completed, and and they will become The Little Mermaid section of Disney’s Art of Animation Resort. The fact that they are opening later than the family suites speaks to Disney’s desire to expand its family suites inventory first.

The Little Mermaid rooms will have an under the sea feel, and will be standard hotel rooms, with one or two beds, one bathroom and no kitchenette. Here’s a rendering of one of The Little Mermaid guest rooms:

If you’re curious about the family suites at Disney’s Art of Animation Resort, this post has more details: Disney World family suites.

I love answering questions from readers, and I decided to share Tania’s question here because I thought it would help others, too. Thanks, Tania! If you have a theme park or family travel question, feel free to e-mail me at leigh at themeparkmom.com, and I will try to find an answer.

Is it really true that the Little Mermaid rooms will be ready for December 2012? If so, when would they open up online to accept advance reservations? I predict an onslaught of people scrambling to get a room.

These rooms are definitely open to being booked. I booked mine online and was a little disapointed that the military discount stops september (if they pick it up again, i dont know) and per night for the halloween time was only $105 a night. Great deal for what I imagine with be a detailed and fresh room. So excited. Looked at the map and the little mermaid buildings are pretty fair away from the main hall, but i would much rather walk by the themed areas of this resort than the somewhat dated theming at all stars.

  5. After several attempts we finally landed a room in little mermaids in June for fall. However, very disappointed to be excluded from the free dining offered to all other value resorts. It is not fair to these guests staying here. The offer should be for everyone. Disney should be fair

  6. I was wondering if you ever thought of changing the layout of your site? Its very well written; I love what youve got to say. But maybe you could a little more in the way of content so people could connect with it better. Youve got an awful lot of text for only having one or two pictures. Maybe you could space it out better? Also I suggest that you could add more interesting topics in your articles like generic cialis. Thanks so much…

  7. I agree with the mom’s question. I also have 2 boys and we would prefer a standrard room, but they wouldn’t be interested in the Little Mermaid. I feel it was bad planning on Disney part to have that as the only standard rooms, I would think you would pick a more meutral movie theme
