Disney Dream Ticket holders audition for American Idol in Orlando

I had the privilege of going to the American Idol auditions in Orlando today, to cover all the hoopla for the Sarasota Herald-Tribune and Orlando Attractions. Though I must admit that when I got up at 3:30 a.m. to drive to downtown Orlando and join the fun, I wasn’t really feeling “privileged.”

Close to 10,000 people turned out waaayyyy too early for their shot at stardom. And I got to walk up and down through the crowds, chatting with them and listening to them sing.

If you’re an American Idol fan, check out my story at HeraldTribune.com. There’s also a photo gallery there with some of my pictures from this morning.

Here’s a link to the video I made featuring four Southwest Florida singers. (I can’t get the embed to work right now.) They appear in this order:

  • Caira Everly, 18, of Cape Coral
  • Cliff Stump, 27, of Sarasota
  • Christy Swathwood, 25, of Sarasota
  • Matt Hembling, 16, of Fort Myers

And then there’s this:

HeraldTribune.com made me their “featured tweeter.” How cool is that?

Over at Orlando Attractions Magazine, I blogged about a couple of the winners of Disney Dream Tickets who were auditioning for American Idol today. The winner of the finale show at the American Idol Experience is awarded one of these “front-of-the-line” passes each day at Disney’s Hollywood Studios. (Read more of my coverage of the American Idol Experience.)

Here’s a video that includes one of the Disney Dream Ticket winners:

I just wanted to let American Idol know what a freekin joke their competition is. My girlfriend and her daughter who is 16 just came back to Ohio from the Orlando audition. Erin didn’t even make it passed the first round. This is a girl who won three teen competitions at the Apollo Theater in New York. She was invited to perform at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland, and finished third in a NAACP singing competition in Cleveland. She has won numerous singing competitions in several states around the country too. The people who judged her selected some kid who sang Josh Groban off key. They also selected some girl who did gymnastics. What a joke. I thought this was a singing competition and your selecting a dancer. I spent over 1K sending them to Florida for this competition. They were in line at 2:30am. Several people who were in line heard Erin sing and they were extremely impressed. I don’t like to criticize but this girl is awsome and she can’t even make it passed the first round. Something isn’t right here. I don’t know who your judges are or what criteria they are looking for but they must be looking for clowns or jugglers, not awesome singers. The public needs to know about this scam.

will pursue Erins singing career in other ways. She will be successful too and will make fun of your pathetic show.

I totally agree with you. It was a joke. I did not expect to see what I saw yesterday at the auditions. It was a waste of time and money. I didn’t even enjoy the experience the whole day. I noticed that after a while, the judges appeared tired, and I saw some of them even ignoring singers while they are singing. It seemed like no matter if you could sing or not, you’re either lucky or not to get picked. They were picking a lot of “costumed-dressed” entertainers. There was so much talent that got ignored, I mean great talent! I guess their choices are to help the show’s ratings…but by now, I’m sure people are tired of seeing foolishness on a singing competition show.
